A few years back, a Wesleyan student got down on one knee in our Coffee House in Middletown CT. by the corner table in the window. His girlfriend said yes. I’d watched them meet here every week for years. When he called ahead to ask if it was ok for him to propose at Klekolo, I wasn’t surprised at all.
This is what happens at Klekolo World Coffee. Not every day, but often enough.
Coffee and conversation create a kind of quiet magic. It unfolds slowly, over time, as people show up and settle in. Klekolo World Coffee has been Middletown’s community gathering place since 1994.

The Morning Regulars at Our Coffee House in Middletown CT
Every morning, the same group of men and women come in around the same time. They don’t always know each other when they start. One orders an espresso. Another grabs a dark roast. Someone comments on the weather or asks what’s good today.
Over weeks and months, those small exchanges become something more. Habit turns into friendship. Now they seek each other out, pulling up chairs, lingering longer than they planned. Connection doesn’t announce itself. It just shows up, one conversation at a time.
Why Coffee Houses Matter
Klekolo World Coffee opened on March 18, 1994, before cell phones took over and social media became background noise. Back then, if you wanted to connect with someone, you had to actually show up.
Thirty-one years later, some of those original customers are still here at our Court Street location. They’ve watched Middletown change. They’ve seen Wesleyan students come and go. They’ve witnessed proposals, celebrated promotions, and weathered hard seasons together.
What hasn’t changed is the reason they keep coming back: this is a coffee house where you can still have a real conversation.
What Makes Klekolo World Coffee Different
We work with seven different roasters, and our coffee selection changes weekly. We focus on organic and fair-trade beans. Because quality matters, not just in what we serve but in how it’s grown and sourced. Whether you’re drinking a single-origin pour-over or trying something new, you’re tasting coffee we actually care about.
But it’s not just the coffee. It’s the community we’ve built around it.
Every Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm, local musicians set up in the corner and fill the room with live music. The last Wednesday of each month, the chess group takes over a few tables, boards spread out, games unfolding quietly. Our walls rotate with work from local artists, many showing publicly for the first time.
We have always believed in giving people a platform. It could be a stage for a nervous first-time performer or wall space for an artist testing the waters.

Valentine’s Specials at Our Coffee House in Middletown CT
Valentine’s Day often focuses on romantic love, but connection takes many forms. Friendship. Community. The familiar face that remembers how you take your coffee.
This year at our Coffee House in Middletown CT, we’re highlighting two drinks perfect for sharing (or keeping all to yourself):
Gypsy Moon – a strawberry, amaretto, white chocolate latte that tastes like winter should: rich, a little indulgent, comforting.
Raspberry Mocha – dark chocolate and raspberry, bold and unapologetic.
Both are reminders that love doesn’t always look like roses and dinner reservations. Sometimes it looks like meeting a friend for coffee on a cold Tuesday. Or becoming a regular somewhere that feels like yours.
