Klekolo World Coffee: 32 Years of Magic in Middletown

In downtown Middletown, Connecticut, there is a spot at 181 Court Street where art hangs on the walls and conversations rise like steam. Inside Klekolo World Coffee, the aroma of fresh coffee sets the tone for the day.

Klekolo World Coffee opened on March 18, 1994, one of Connecticut’s first coffee houses serving organic and fair-trade coffees. Over time, we evolved into a place where global flavors meet local friendships.

People have been coming to our Middletown, CT. coffee house for over thirty-two years, for coffee, creativity, and connection. Some come from downtown, local areas, and Wesleyan University down the road. Others drive in from across the Connecticut River Valley.

All of them leave knowing something real happened here.

Standing Out in a World of Coffee Chains

When chains appeared on every corner, we stayed true to who we were.
No rush. No sameness. No script.

Small, independent coffee houses hold a different kind of magic. They offer real people, real stories, and real flavor, the kind you won’t find at a drive-through window.

Because of that focus, we care for every cup and every person who walks through the door. That simple choice has carried Klekolo World Coffee through more than three decades in the heart of Middletown.

Our Approach: Curating Coffee, Art & Experience

Ethically Sourced, Ever-Changing Coffees

We source organic, fair-trade, shade-grown, and small-farm coffees from award-winning roasters.

Great beans begin with great farming. No single roaster owns every flavor. Working with several roasters allows us to showcase a wider world of coffee.

You might taste a Haitian French Roast from one master roaster, a spicy Monsoon Malabar from another, or a buttery Kona from a third.

Every origin carries its own story: soil, sun, climate, and care.

Our coffees shift with the seasons — not for novelty, but because coffee truly changes with time and place. Every choice is intentional.

Klekolo World Coffee: A Creative Coffee House Culture

Klekolo has always been a home for art. Local artists bring color to our walls, turning the shop into a living gallery.

Over the years, many Connecticut artists have shown their work here — painters, photographers, and mixed-media creators.

Music is part of the rhythm as well. Our Tuesday Night Music Series, held weekly from 7–9 PM, fills the café with folk, jazz, indie, and original songs.

Artists and musicians have helped shape Klekolo since the beginning.
Coffee is the anchor, but connection is the heart.

The Result: Thirty Two Years of Connection and Coffee

Over the years we have brewed many cups and met many people.

Some customers say Klekolo feels like a second home. Others tell us they discovered coffees here they had never seen anywhere else. A customer even shared their experience in A Coffee Lover’s Journey Into Friendship and Love.

We continue to pour every cup with care.
Our coffee house has a big heart.

And we are still welcoming everyone who walks through the door at 181 Court Street.

What We’ve Learned

After more than three decades as an independent coffee house in Middletown, a few things have proven true.

A thoughtful menu keeps coffee exciting and invites people to return and try something new.

Art, music, and conversation bring people together in ways no loyalty app ever could.

Ethical sourcing matters — to us and increasingly to our customers who want to know the story behind their cup.

And community grows one honest moment at a time. Not through branding, but through showing up day after day.

The Chronicle Article by Margret Radman March 2026

A Klekolo World Coffee Birthday Surprise

This week, a copy of The Chronicle arrived in a customer’s mailbox, with a story about Klekolo celebrating 32 years.

Written by Margaret Radman, the article reflects on the coffee house as a place where coffee, art, and community meet.

Seeing our small coffee house described as a “cultural hub” was a quiet reminder of something we have always believed:

The real magic of a place like this comes from the people who walk through the door.

We are grateful to still be here.
Still brewing.
Still part of Middletown’s daily rhythm.
