DR Congo is located in Central Africa.
The country was known as Zaire between 1971 and 1997.
The DRC borders the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east, Zambia to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
It is the second largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world.

This Kivu coffee is from the SOPACDI coffee co-op which is located on Lake Kivu, straddling the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.
ten years ago SOPACDI joined the international coffee market. They designed a program to assist them with business skills and began rehabilitating the farms. This improved infrastructure included the construction of the first new central coffee washing station to be built in the Congo for almost half a century.
This coffee comes from one of the Hutwe washing stations located in Kirumba, in North Kivu, near the Virunga National Park.

Harvested by hand, dry method this coffee travels to the one of the Virunga washing stations where it is hulled and then trucked to the port of Mombasa, a 2 to 4-day journey across two countries, Uganda and Kenya.
SOPACDI now has over 5,200 farmers, 20% of whom are women. In a region infamous for rampant sexual violence, political instability, and civil war SOPACDI is a leader in promoting gender equality and stable jobs. SOPACDI has earned the Sustainability Award Recipient from the Specialty Coffee Association of America 2014.
